Throughout the last several decades, building trends have leaned towards larger community spaces. While this makes a home feel spacious and welcoming, it can also create some challenges when it comes to defining certain areas. However, you don’t have to call a contractor and start putting in permanent walls to effectively divide the space. Here are just a few smart ways that you take that large area and create cozy, definable sections that will satisfy everyone.
The Bar
If you love entertaining, then mark the space between your dining and living rooms with a beautiful bar. One that’s built on casters can easily be shifted around, and you can open it up when you have a party. You’ll appreciate the extra space for making drinks when friends are over, and it can serve as a neat room divider when it’s just you and family.
Folding Screens
Folding screens have always been used as room dividers, but now you can get them on wheels for easier positioning. This is the perfect solution for any situation where you may need to quickly remove the divider and open the area back up. They’re typically found on hard flooring surfaces, so you may want to choose one with some upholstery or fabric on it to help absorb sound and make the area quieter.
Organization and Privacy
Of course, you don’t have to go with a removable barrier. If you are interested in a permanent structure, then turn to a cabinet company for assistance. Shallow cabinets can be designed to add storage to the space. With cubbies or cabinets on the bottom and open shelves on the top, you can add function to this simple concept.
Rehang the Windows
If you’re lucky enough to come across some old wood frame windows, then you can really have fun with the room divider. After cleaning up the window frames and ensuring that they’re still solid, you can hang them from the ceiling using wires. Display artwork or pictures inside each panel to add interest and style to the divider. This works particularly well if you hang the window above a bookshelf or another piece of furniture so that people don’t accidentally walk into the fixture.
Whether you choose to hang a sheer curtain or stack up a few bookcases to make a room divider, the fact is that you can get creative when dividing the space. If you like entertaining and need the open area at times, then look for a bar or rolling screens that can be moved around. Otherwise, you can have fun with permanent fixtures like cubbies and even old window frames.
